ABOUT US
Northview High School's Literary Magazine, The Muse, is a student-run publication that compiles student-made art and writing into an annual magazine. Founded in 2002, this class was formed on the principles of being able to escape the structure of school and create an environment where it is possible to explore the arts and find your voice. Exploring a variety of works, we focus on combining creative writing and the arts into our publications. Heavily involved within the school, we take the work of Northview's talented artists, writers, composers, and many more and showcase their work to celebrate their achievements. On our website, you will find interviews with artists from around the school and community that have helped spread their influence and inspired others to follow their passion.
The Muse accepts, but is not limited to, works such as poetry, prose, screenplays, music compositions, song lyrics, and visual arts submissions. Each submission is then critiqued on quality and theme before selection. Students whose work(s) are accepted become published writers or artists, and their art is circulated not only throughout the school, but throughout national competitions as well. Northview's The Muse is dedicated to giving all students' art and writing a voice, an outlet to expand their talent, and a chance to be heard.

THE MUSE: 2022
Like many other institutions, our school and the method of teaching and learning has been affected by COVID-19. While it was hard to adjust to at first, we've been able to learn what's best for our magazine in a new structure and procedure. Now that our format of publication has become digitized, our team is working hard to adapt - and even revolutionize - the magazine to these changes.
If you've visited us before, you might notice that things are a little different. Not to worry - any old favorites that you might be looking for are still available! You can visit our archived website below.

STAFFThe Muse is ever-changing in its style due to its constant flow of students, bringing to the team a new kind of complexity, a new kind of nuance each year. We are so excited for you to meet our 2022-2023 staff members!

OUR MAGAZINESEach year, after physical copies of the magazine are published and sold, The Muse publishes free digital excerpts of past issues. Due to circumstances, we were unable to publish a physical copy of our 2020 issue (Ephemeral) and 2022 issue (Concrete), so we published the entire magazine online for anyone to view freely. We hope that you enjoy the wonderful work of our school community's writers, artists, and designers!

FAQs
Q: I have a piece of art, how do I submit it online?
For traditional pieces of art, due to universal remote learning, we are not currently able to digitally scan your art. You can absolutely scan your art yourself or take a high quality picture (check for good lighting, no slanted edges, high resolution) and send it to our email [email protected].
Q: What is the theme for 2022-2023?
Our magazine theme this year is '________'! You can view the philosophy here.
Q: What type of art do you accept?
Because The Muse has a very broad concept of art, we accept everything ranging from a musical composition to a haiku! If you're unsure about whether or not your piece is a type of work that we accept, please email us (or simply fill out the contact form at the bottom of this page) and we'll let you know!
Q: How long will it take until I know if I was accepted?
The entire critiquing process can take anywhere from two to three weeks, but not all pieces are featured in the magazine due to a limited number of pages in our magazine. Art and writing is confirmed to be a part of the magazine as layouts are created, which is an on-going yearly process. We will email artists and writers regarding their acceptance throughout the year. All published artists and writers have free entrance to our release party at the end of the year.
Q: Can I submit videos?
Yes! Videos may be featured on our website. Submit your video with a small blurb about it, what inspired you to create it, and your name to our email [email protected].
Q: How do I become featured on the website?
If you want to be featured on the website, please submit an application during the school-wide art/writing search (which is under our Submissions tab when applications are open), and check the "Allow on Website" box! If you have a submission you prefer to only be on the website, write a note on your application or email us at [email protected]. Throughout the year, we also host community projects, where we search for artists/writers to interview and feature on our website. If you are interested in being interviewed, please let one of the staff members know or simply email us!
Q: I want a lit mag! How do I get one?
If you ordered a publication package at the beginning of the year, The Muse is part of the package! If you didn't, simply talk to one of the current staff members about purchasing one or email us! In a typical year, the magazine runs from $10-15 per copy.
Q: How do I become a part of The Muse?
We put out applications close to the end of the school year in spring semester. You will be asked to submit one to two pieces of art, as well as one to two pieces of writing. We judge all applicants based on the quality of their work. We welcome everyone to apply and are always happy to accept a new face into our family!
